Autumn Beauty Essentials

With autumn being the ultimate season here at the Attic, it’s unsurprising that it’s a time where we feel most at ease with ourselves and are able to build our ultimate looks of the year. Gone are the compromises of summer and the worries of what will or won’t work under a sweltering heat, and now is the time to embrace our warm cozy hues, effortless hair goals, and perfectly deep red lips.

This autumn I've been getting into bronze eyeshadow and red lips. The ohii ‘Treasure’ eyeshadow palette available at Urban Outfitters is a perfect, autumnal palette for all your warm-toned needs.

Autumn and winter are never kind to my skin; this is the time of year in which I start switching to heavier creams, like this gorgeous rescue cream by Caudalie. I am also very into toners right now; I got a sample of this one by Ren when I attended an event at Space NK and it has absolutely changed the texture of my skin while also keeping it hydrated. As for makeup, it’s all about shimmery eyes and berry lips for me. My favourite berry lip is Rebel by MAC, and on my eyes I wear nothing but the shade “High” by Urban Decay from their Smoky palette.

For me, this autumn has been both about being more minimal – putting away the summer blush and the highlighter – and more dramatically matte. I’ve gone back to my powder foundation, and I’m finally going for the dark red lips I’ve always wanted to try as my only accent of the season. I picked up my first NARS lipstick in early September, and I’ve been wearing their burgundy “Under my Thumb” matte liquid lipstick all season. It’s been quite an adjustment – wearing red lipstick really does mean you need to make sure it’s perfect all of the time, especially when using a liquid formula – but I love it. It’s understated but dramatic and exactly what I want.

Like Lauren, I’ve embraced the use of toner; this Woodlot one is a small batch favorite and gives my skin an even glow that keeps highlighter unnecessary. Otherwise, I’ve been going matte with the help of Rimmel’s Stay Matte Powder Foundation and my new favorite Stila Stay All Day Countouring Bronzer. I’m not the contour type, but a fluffy brush and a light swipe in key areas give enough color to keep rainy days from having me look too sallow.  Lip-wise I’m still on my year-round favorite, Bite’s Amuse Bouche Lipstick in Tannin. Where in spring or summer I mainly blotted it on as a moisturizing stain, I now apply it straight from the bullet for it’s full, statement-making impact.

Halloween may now be a thing of the past for this 2018, but the lavishness of my makeup bag does not suffer for it. Rich reds are still definitely a staple, NARS’s Cruella being one of my favourites. Dramatic eyelashes are easily achievable with Beauty Pie’s Flash False Lash Mascara in Cosmic Black. Then, ‘shine bright like a diamond’, our friend Rihanna would say, with Fenty’s Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter Duo (my fave is n.1 Lighting Dust/Fire Crystal but there are so many shades, it’s amazing!).
